1. Layers

Being able to work with layers is essential for those of us who want to create or edit our own images. All images are made up of layers of shapes, text, colours and textures which are flattened when complete. Use Gimp to create layers that are white, transparent or filled with your selected foreground or background colour. You can also move the layers around and bring certain aspects of your image forward or backwards dependant on how prominent you want it to be.

2. Filters

The filters section is particularly useful if you are editing photos. The Gimp image editing tool offers you a variety of filters to choose from. Select from a wide range of artistic, noise, blur, decorative and shadow filters to overlay across the top of your image. Use then to create certain styles of image such as old photos or modern abstract images. Your creative graphic design will know no limits with such variety!

3. Toolbox

The Gimp toolbox is full of some great editing tools. There are a number of ‘select’ tools which allow you to pick out and edit certain sections of the image you are working on. There are the ‘transform’ tools which allow you to change the perspective of a layer, resize a layer or even rotate it. There are the colour tools which are made up of the colour picker, pencil, paintbrush, gradient tool and bucket fill.

4. Brushes

Brushes are great for adding detail to an image. Brushes come in all shapes and sizes such as flourishes, bubbles, hair textures, grunge patterns, stripes, flowers, and eye colours. There are a number of great websites which you can download free brushes from or if you require something more complex you can buy a brush pack.

Overall, Gimp is a fantastic creative graphic design tool that will allow you to make all sorts of essential business material. The Gimp image editing tool is one of the many great open source tools that are available but so many people do not even know it exists!
