Socialize tumblr blog! Add sharing buttons get creative.

Tumblr is a great platform to blog. I myself find it very amusing to blog on my tumblr just because its so easy and simple and especially because it has 100s and 1000s of themes to choose from absolutely free! Today i am going to tell you how to socialize tumblr blog within 2 minutes.

By default, tumblr doesn’t come with any sharing options and to socialize tumblr it has no plugins like wordpress you can install from, so there’s only one option, you gotta do it on your own. Dont worry, if that term sounds dangerous then why do you think i wrote this tutorial for you? Ok so in just two minutes you will learn how to insert codes in tumblr with which you can successfully add any sharing buttons you want onto your tumblr blog!

Sharing buttons for your post page:

The code language for adding scripts onto your post page in tumblr is – {block:PermalinkPage}{/block:PermalinkPage} Any code that you had like to appear in the post page you should insert it between these two tags. I will only show you how to add facebook like and tweet button, for the rest all you can easily figure it out from the example below.When in tumblr dashboard click “Customize” and then select the “Theme” tab from the top bar. You will get a HTML box just like this.

Skip through all the post sections like Photo Post, Chat post, Audio post, Video post. Now just after the Video post insert the following code:

{block:PermalinkPage}<iframe src=”{URLEncodedPermalink}&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=false&amp;width=450&
amp;font=arial&amp;colorscheme=light” scrolling=”no” frameborder=”0″ allowTransparency=”true” style=”border:none; overflow:hidden; width:200px; height:24px”></iframe><a href=”” data-url=”{Permalink}” data-count=”horizontal” data-via=”Crysislevel“>Tweet</a><script type=”text/javascript” src=””></script>{/block:PermalinkPage}

Change your twitter username instead of the text in red.

Just like the screenshot below

Sharing buttons for your home page:

The code language for adding scripts onto your home page in tumblr is – {block:IndexPage}{/block:IndexPage}

You can use the same code given above to further socialize tumblr but please make sure you insert it inside these tags {block:IndexPage}{/block:IndexPage} for it to show up only on the home page. So after you insert the button codes inside those tags it should look like this:

{block:IndexPage}<iframe src=”{URLEncodedPermalink}&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=false&amp;width=450&amp;action=like&amp;font=arial&amp;colorscheme=light” scrolling=”no” frameborder=”0″ allowTransparency=”true” style=”border:none; overflow:hidden; width:200px; height:24px”></iframe><a href=”” data-url=”{Permalink}” data-count=”horizontal” data-via=”Crysislevel”>Tweet</a><script type=”text/javascript” src=””></script>{/block:IndexPage}

Thats it! Congratulations, now you know how to insert scripts and to socialize tumblr blog into a full-fledged fantastic blogging environment. In my next tumblr tutorial i will show you how to make use of ShareThis and AddThis platforms to further customize your blog! Subscribe to this post for further tumblr updates.

    Hi there, Thank you so much, do you know why the Twitter button is showing up as text and not a button on my website? Thank you!

    This isn’t working for me. I copied the first code and insert it after Video post. But on my Blog isn’t any Facebook Like-button or tweet-button…

            I tried your adding the facebook like and twitter button code and it did not work on my tumblr.. it freaks me out that I used to write irc programs for chat back in the day (late 90’s lol) but this has me stumped.. I saw you could possibly send an alternate code? I would love if that could happen.. I had a tmblr theme I enjoyed and it was still free and me doing something crazy now has me with an ugly header with no bio and photo on the side.. I love to blog but not enough to pay for a theme :) I doubt many ppl read it but might if they had share buttons.. thank you for your time :)

    I am a newbie to all this so sorry for the ignorant questions…I can’t find the index page block you reference in the theme I’m using. So I tried instead to just add it to each post type. Started with Photos and when I insert it it gives me just the word Twitter at the end of the post but you get error page not found when you click on it. And I don’t see facebook anywhere. I’ll gladly send you the code if that would help. Thanks for any advice!

  6. David Reply

    Thanks a lot!

    I must of tried a dozen different ways of doing this without putting the {block:permalinkpage} in its own section.

  7. Charles Huang Reply

    I’ve been having the same problem it seems as others above when i tried to embed the code for each post in my tumblr? in my tumblr posts, i see the “tweet” icon now at the end of each post, but when you click on “tweet”, it comes up with “not found” error and the following Tumblr error message:

    “Not found
    We couldn’t find the page you were looking for.

    Feel free to contact support if there’s anything
    we can help you find.”

    Any help? seems like you’ve updated the code script? can you send to me pls?

    hi, this is isn’t working for me, i tried to put it on every section where should i put it?

    i know it depends on the code of the theme itself, maybe i can send you the tumblr code so you can point where i should put it?

    thank you!!!

    so? any tip?? i’ll truly appreciate ot!

    • Gautam Doddamani Reply

      hi cesar..i know exactly what you are talking about. blogger designs suck a lot…but my subscription box is custom made by me. i got inspired by’s design and i tried to design one for my site itself. but if you are looking for a plugin to do the job…here is a nice article on that. :)
